Country’s Largest Rummage Sale Celebrates 91 Years
Winnetka, IL: Christ Church announces its 91st annual Rummage Sale, which attracts over 4,000 shoppers annually from as far away as Canada, and raises close to $300K for charity. The sale is run by 400+ volunteers, some of whom have been working the sale for over 40 years.
This year’s sale takes place on October 1, 2015 from 7am-3pm.
“This sale offers so many important benefits to the community,” said Charlotte McGee, Christ Church parishioner and Rummage Coordinator.
- “We accept donations all year, and recycle items that would otherwise end up in a landfill.
- We sell primarily to people who rely on sales like this to provide for their families’ needs, and can’t afford to pay retail.
- We distribute hundreds of thousands of dollars in unrestricted grants to over 50 social service organizations who serve the needy.
- And our entire parish comes together in a monumental combined effort, which creates an amazing sense of community.”
The Christ Church Rummage Sale offers 32 departments, filling 3 buildings and 5 outdoor tents. Shoppers can find everything from clothes, to furniture, to stereos, to sterling silver – even fur coats and wedding dresses. Loyal shoppers, some arriving in buses, often line up the night before to be first for early bargains, and come from all over the greater Chicago area, several surrounding states and Canada.
“I bring my truck every year to buy clothes for my children, furniture for my apartment and everything I need to keep my household going,” said one shopper, who’s been shopping the sale for 11 years. “I even buy Christmas gifts for my kids. I don’t know what my family would do without this sale!”
Christ Church is an Episcopal Church in the village of Winnetka, IL. To learn more about the Christ Church Rummage Sale or to find directions to the sale, visit www.christchurchwinnetka.org.
There are some year round volunteer opportunities helping sort donations. During the weeks leading up to the sale, volunteers are needed to help set up departments and prepare for the sale, always the first Thursday in October.
